People say that a lot of work, but it is actually not quite true.
I myself have been a very long practice of using different Python web frameworks and a good time to understand the current position of the platform on the freelance market and not only.
First of all, you need to tell Django that fairly sucks(as it so mildly...) web framework. For easy sites, Yes, something big — it is better to go for Pylons, Pyramid.
Then, a bit about freelancing:
On Russian websites freelance orders very, very little. Money will not receive. You're lucky if you find orders for turnkey websites/zero, there can be anything to use. BUT! Turnkey site should not take if you are one and there are no friends of coders, designers, companions.
Really to find work on ODesk. However, there is not enough orders. In General, the situation is similar, only the total number of orders more. But, alas, not always. You can often observe the "jobs" that require the know-all and not just the web, this "vacancy" from some company. Accordingly, there is stricter selection, but if you're lucky, orders will not be enough.
There is another side to modern web-Virgo — Ruby on Rails. Orders everywhere more than the Python, sites to do on this platform easier, more community. But! This is only for web dev.
