.NET developers (and probably not only them) know that there is a book like "CLR via C#", Jeffrey Richter — a kind of "Bible" for .NET programmer.
Attention, question to experts: what "Bible" for PHP programmer?
Please do not kick, I know that there is Google and so on.

I once helped "PHP5" Dmitry kotěra (Denwer.ru) and Alexei Kostarev.
Dmitry writes very well in General, respect him!

Not as the Bible, but simply as a good book on PHP I can advise this:

A Bible for any programmer, in my opinion it is lib.mexmat.ru/books/77

Generally, usually php.net helps. There, and the "similar" function, and breakdown by categories.
Hardly in the book you can find something more complete.
Or offline you just need a source?

One thing the function reference with a full description of the arguments and examples (here it is clear that each language has its own directory), and another thing to collect it all into a big working system with a designed architecture. These principles have for many languages can be the same.
A good program in PHP or any other language, I think, includes the proper use of the functions in the correct architecture.
Functions php.net . Architecture and patterns of specific source will not name, but will distinguish the author — M. Fowler.

Off topic, but General advice: buy the books of reputable foreign publishing houses: O Relly, Wrox, SAMS.
Against domestic books I personally have a prejudice.
