Is this external hard drive. Now it is used as an offline dump for backups. One idea is to use it as a dumping ground for loading and subsequent continuous long-term distribution of torrents. Ie it will always appeal and, accordingly, it does not automatically fill as it does now in the absence of such.

How much will this affect the lifespan? What will manifest problems when they start to appear in time of active operation (months, years...)?

I would even say that it will be even easier than usual, the temperatures are more pleasant.

MNU killed Samsung 750гигов less than a year torrents + dc++ in LAN. temperature normal, 35-40градусов. there were read errors, terrible brakes, etc.
I wouldn't be too hoping that the usb-screw will live longer, because the manufacturer also understands and redundant reliability to lay dislikes.
for me is the feeling that if the load is even slightly exceeds the requirements of Housewives, to take only the little black wd with sata.

the screw will be easier than usual for several reasons:
have limited USB speed is rarely of the external screws which USB can write 40-50мбайт/sec. slower write — less stress.
in the outer factory screws usually put the slow screws(5400 Obor) to have enough power over USB. again, the wear is less than the standard at 7200 equi.
also due to previous reasons should bonus less hot, and therefore lives longer.

Well, the cons — if you have a channel wide and a lot of torrents, then USB is just not fast enough. Should screw directly with UCB/eSATA.

I put the torrents on the external Seagate 160 gigs — worked fine, didn't bend. And colleagues above correctly say — the temperature mode is really better. But still really want to use for such purposes a separate tray with WiFi.
