Decided to learn Python. Advise IDE for development in Python, preferably free, and, if possible, some sensible book for beginners.

Eclipse plugin to develop for Python — PyDev

Windows — PyCharm — speak good (not tried it myself), or Wing, and sometimes the standard IDLE fits.
Linux Geany (Yes it is, and for all languages fit — lightweight and comfortable), and of course Vim/Emacs.

You can talk about alternatives, but by far the PyCharm. I have tried probably all the well-known python IDE. It's fast, full featured (everything you need will be there), visually pleasing. Personally, I really like intelligent code inspection, auto-completion, debug.

It is important that everything is well configured. There is support for plugins. As a co-pilot using SublimeText3 for small edits and all small things
