Good afternoon.
It's time to learn how to administer a web server. For these purposes, I bought a simple VPS.
And immediately the question arose: where to start? All that was found was reduced to the dumbest set of commands, without a sensible description of what and why.
Where it is possible to read in detail about raising and configuration: apache+mysql+php, ftp? I think to start I will be enough.

Set up out of necessity, engage in some specific purpose, and the course will learn a lot using search engines, it is written very much.

I agree with : need specific goals.
A couple very practical: support multiple versions of PHP or other interpreters, static content via middleware, etc.: walk around the hosting companies and see what they have interesting

"Where can be read about raising and configuration: apache+mysql+php, ftp?"
Oddly enough:
Apache: httpd.apache.org/
MySQL: www.mysql.com/
PHP: www.php.net/
FTP: to taste www.pureftpd.org/ www.proftpd.org/ vsftpd.beasts.org/

Use Google, Luke!

VDS? It is necessary to pay considerable attention to safety:
— closes password access via SSH;
— install Firewall and Denyhosts.
Read more on the default language here.

But in General, the question you can read a nice description here.
