FreeMind is free and good.

Tried MindJet MindManager, beautiful, but too fancy and negrevergne, apparently to justify the cost.

xmind — a Program and service. There is a paid version and a free. From the point of view of the experience much better than FreeMind.

Few years trying different programs and so far to suit your needs only picked up `The Brain 7` and `Nova Mind 5,` for there is a possibility of relative links, if I put it right. In the same `MindManager` is implemented very very uncomfortable ("Relationship"), and the best implementation of this in `The Brain 7`. But while testing it and see whether it is convenient in terms of speed. In `MindManager`e I liked the speed of creation, and especially a good tool there, "Brainstorming", but often had to hotelcasa on some things — such as more flexible placement of topics so that they fit on the screen, especially on a netbook (10.1").
\r
So if You need a tree structure of cards, any one of pop options for You. But in the case where you want the object (the topic) could be a child of not only one object (the topic, yeah), then there is better `The Brain` is not seen.
\r
Another good idea to `Nova Mind 5` organized recurrent connection, if I'm not blunt with the meaning of this term. That is, there is the possibility to establish connections (Relationships) of the object by the same themselves (!!! such a move in MindManager when you create the link).
\r
Even a dry erase Board is a good thing!
\r
But pen + paper — IMHO, not the best option, because the rule is impossible, you can only cross out. Not to mention the change of places "topics."
\r
Success to You and Your brain, whatever You started )

MindNode OS X.
Very simple and neat utility.
Conveniently, there is a possibility to export to image or PDF.
Exists in two versions — regular and "pro"

Comparison table standard and extended: www.mindnode.com/mindnode/feature-chart/

If money is not a pity — MindManager,
If mind — XMind,
FreeMind — "classic" opencores, knows a lot, but the interface is very poor.

MindManager is good, but too bulky, and the plug-in for Outlook still buggy on some systems. So xMind.
