Just installed Debian 9.3 with the Gnome desktop environment. If you have not created users, assuming the entry under root. But in the graphic window logon can't log in as root, I get the message "didn't work. Try again." Then I go to the console, create a user and under it try to go again in the graphics window. But get the same message. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you all. The problem was that when creating a new user did not create the user's home directory.

Root access you will not enter, unless specifically configured. Create a new user and log in as him!
Switch the console on Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in as root, create a new user with the command adduser myuser

root in many modern systems are generally disconnected from a sin far away.
and suggest never to create.

use ProgramName temporary gain root privileges, sudo, and others like them. it's a little tricky, but porchdog safer.

1. Root access to work. Especially if this is your first installation of Linux (and the unfortunate joke about "EREM eref minus the forward slash" (spelled it wrong on purpose) - and you jokes do not understand, copy, paste, ... oops, where's my system? :D )
2. Root access to work. What happens see 1
3. Root access to work. What happens, see p. 2
...
Ruth N you can not work...
