Building isometric shapes in Adobe Illustrator?

You want to render super huge illustration in isometric projection. Have to draw completely different shapes (not only with right angles). Decided to start with the most simple. See example below.

My way: draw the base square, scroogle corners, making vertical rescale to 86,062% tilt 30 degree, rotate -30 degrees. The basis shapes in isometric ready. And then a stupor. To make volume, or to achieve the effect of inner shadow so hell have to velosipedit that I am even ashamed to write.

Question: what tools in Adobe Illustrator I do not know what I have to do these simple things (the volume effect, shadows, curves) terrible ways?

Look at the tools 3d blend and extrude, they are quite simple, if you understand.

I also often use the Metaball script.jsx - he spends a tangent from one curve to another, but does not do it very neatly, at the joints there are burrs.
