Hello, I would like to hear comments about the choice between Homebrew and MacPorts. At the moment there are both of me is a bit annoying. Often have to watch the output type to learn binary installed what I use, and sometimes to change the order in the PATH. With the arrival of Mountain Lion I would like to finally choose what is right for me.

MacPorts suits almost all: this is the official solution that is well-established that I can configure, but has two big drawbacks:
  • the fresh version is not very popular ports are not updated as fast as we would like
  • system-wide installation

The second drawback is very controversial, I never encountered any problems in this approach.

On the other hand, Homebrew allows you to add your formula without any problems and fumble them on Github, for example. But with brew I had a negative experience in the other car broke the upgrade procedure and I spent a lot of time to fix.

brew. For newer packages, and more convenient.

I ispolzoval Homebrew precisely because of the simple formula design and installation you find that you can delete using rm-rf. And the fact that MacPorts formal decision this is not true.

Use homebrew not already on the first laptop — normal flight.
Initially chosen because of ease of installation/works, and then became involved. Reminiscent of the work packages in your favorite OpenBSD. But that's all IMHO.
